Likeness is the whole job — everything else is secondary.
A portrait either looks like the person or it does not, and there is no partial credit. Every other quality — shading, contrast, composition — is in service of that one outcome, which makes portraiture the least forgiving work in the studio and the work most worth being honest with you about before it starts.
Likeness is decided by the reference, not by the tattooing. A sharp, well-lit, high-resolution photograph taken straight on gives the information a likeness is built from. A small, dark, heavily filtered or screenshotted image does not, and no amount of skill recovers detail that was never captured. If the only photograph you have is a poor one, you will be told what that means for the result rather than finding out at the end.
Scale is the other constraint. Faces need room — a portrait that is too small loses precisely the fine relationships around the eyes and mouth that the brain uses to recognise someone, and the piece stops reading as that person. Most portraits are forearm-sized or larger for this reason.
Many portraits here are memorial pieces, which are approached with the weight that deserves. There is no rush in a private studio, the session is yours, and the design is agreed with you before any needle is involved.
